Brachioplasty (Arm Lift) Before & After Pictures

Arm Lifts, or Brachioplasties, are used to remove excess skin from the upper arm. Often, the Arm Lift is performed after large amounts of weight loss, commonly seen after Bariatric Surgery. Weight Loss Surgery can achieve remarkable decreases in weight, but the excess skin required to cover a larger body often does not shrink as the fat leaves. Loose skin is a major problem for many weight loss patients. Not only is it a reminder of heavier days, but it can continue to make fitting into clothes difficult.

Common areas of difficulty are the face, breasts, belly, thighs and arms. So it follows that common Post-Bariatric Plastic Surgeries include: Face Lifts (Rhytidectomies), Breast Lifts (Mastopexies), Tummy Tucks (Abdominoplasties), Thigh Lifts (Thighplasties) and the topic of this page, Arm Lifts (Brachioplasties).

Brachioplasty (Arm Lift) Before and After Photos

Above, you will find a gallery of our Arm Lift Before and After Pictures. The before pictures are on the left, while the after pictures are on the right. These pictures are of actual patients who have had their plastic surgery by Dr. Joseph Mele, MD, FACS, at our San Francisco Bay Area plastic surgery center. While our Brachioplasty Before and After Photos can serve as a guide to what is possible with cosmetic surgery, your individual results will vary.

What To Look For In Brachioplasty Before And After Photos

Brachioplasty literally means Arm Changing. So what can Arm Changing surgery do? Below are selected Arm Lift Before and After Photos that demonstrate five major objectives that Brachioplasty can provide: 1) reduced arm skin; 2) reduced arm girth; 3) reduced arm wobble; 4) the ability to fit in normal clothing; and 5) a scar that is optimally positioned for reduced visibility.

Reduced Arm Skin

Brachioplasty Provides Reduced Arm Skin Laxity
Arm Lift Before and After Photos - Reduced Arm Skin: The primary goal of an Arm Lift is to reduce the amount of loose arm skin.

Before: This patient has lost a massive amount of weight. The result is an arm that is smaller; however, it still retains three times the amount of skin it needs for coverage. The stretching of the skin, without recoil after weight loss, is the reason that Arm Lifts are one of the more common Post Bariatric Plastic Surgery Procedures.

After: The excess skin is removed during the Brachioplasty, which allows the remaining skin to be tailored to the size of the arm. Goals achieved are: correction of the arm skin laxity; allowing the skin to conform to the arm contours; preventing excess movement (flapping) of the arm and reducing the arm to a size that fits easily into a normal sleeve.

Reduced Arm Girth

Brachioplasty Provides Reduced Arm Girth
Arm Lift Before and After Photos - Reduced Arm Girth: Reducing the amount of Arm Skin also reduces the Arm Girth.

Before: This patient's weight loss has resulted in smaller arms, but there is an incomplete loss of the fat in her arm. She is left with redundant loose skin that is still full. The amount of fullness and skin redundancy both progressively increase proximally (closer to the armpit). An Arm Lift can help with both problems.

After: The residual fat is attached to the loose skin. During the Brachioplasty the fat is removed along with the redundant skin. This not only tightens the loose arm skin, but it also decreases the size of the arm.

Reduced Arm Wobble

Brachioplasty Provides Reduced Arm Wobble
Arm Lift Before and After Photos - Reduced Arm Wobble: Reducing the amount of arm skin and arm girth also reduces the amount of unwanted arm movement.

Before: This patient has loose skin and a mass of residual fat near the axilla (arm pit). Loose skin allows the soft tissues of the arm to flap with movement, and the added weight attached to the skin adds more momentum. This means that when the arm stops moving, the upper arm skin continues. This can be uncomfortable and embarrassing.

After: The loose, heavy skin has been completely removed with the Arm Lift. The firm arm now moves normally, and skin no longer swings from the bottom of the arm. Now, when she stops waving, so will her arm.

The Ability To Fit Into A Normal Sleeve

Brachioplasty Provides An Arm Small Enough To Fit Into A Normal Sleeve
Arm Lift Before and After Photos - The Ability To Fit Into A Normal Sleeve: Reducing the amount of arm skin, arm girth and arm movement means wearing normal sleeves is possible again.

Before: This patient cannot wear normal sleeves before the Brachioplasty. The opening of the sleeve is smaller than the size of the arm, compressing and pinching the arm. Longer sleeves can look like stuffed sausages, neither comfortable nor attractive. Since the majority of the mass of the arm is loose skin, losing more weight will not help. The patient shown above had problems with sleeves; however, the Arm Lift Before and After Pictures shown above in the Reduced Arm Skin section may be an even better example.

After: The patient had an Arm Lift and now wears sleeves comfortably. The arm size is reduced, and clothing options are increased.

Reduced Arm Lift Scar Visibility

Brachioplasty Scars Need To Be Carefully Positioned
Arm Lift Before and After Photos - Scar Placement: The Arm Lift scar is placed along the lower border of the arm, making it hard to see from the front.

Before: the most obvious downside to the Arm Lift is the scar. Appropriate scar creation, healing and placement are all very important. Even "good" Brachioplasty scars can be seen. Some plastic surgeons place the scar on the front of the arm, just below the biceps muscle, but Dr. Mele prefers to place the scar along the bottom of the arm further conceal it.

Arm Lift Before and After Photos - Scar Placement: The Arm Lift scar is placed along the lower border of the arm, making it hard to see from the back too.

After: The patient had an Arm Lift, with obvious reduction of the arm's loose skin, girth and movement. Sleeves now fit comfortably. With the scar along the lower border of the arm, the Brachioplasty scar is better hidden. If you look along the bottom of the Arm Lift Before and After Pictures displayed above, the scar is hard to see from both the front and the back. The scar is most noticeable when the arm is raised directly overhead.
