Tummy Tuck Before & After Pictures
Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) is the big sister to the Mini Tummy Tuck. It can do everything that a Mini Abdominoplasty can do and more. The Abdominoplasty is used to tighten the abdominal wall after pregnancy and weight loss. It allows your plastic surgeon to not only tighten the skin of the abdomen, but also the tighten the abdominal wall muscles, which are the foundation of a flatter tummy. Tummy tucks tighten the abdominal muscles like an internal corset, tighten the skin above and below the umbilicus (belly button) and remove any disproportionate fat from the lower belly.

A Guide To Tummy Tuck Before And After Pictures
Above is our gallery of our Tummy Tuck Before and After Pictures. For most pairs, the before pictures are on the left, while the after pictures are on the right. Sometimes, the pictures are oriented vertically with the before picture on top and the after picture below it. All pictures are of actual patients who have had their plastic surgery by Dr. Joseph Mele, MD, FACS, at our San Francisco Bay Area plastic surgery center. While our Abdominoplasty Before and After Photos can serve as a guide to what is possible with cosmetic surgery, your individual results will vary. Several examples of Tummy Tuck Before and After Photos are explained below in more detail including the Fleur De Lis Tummy Tuck and a Mommy Makeover.
Tummy Tuck Before And After Pictures: Example 1
Tummy Tuck Before and Afters: Lateral (side) view of the Tummy Tuck shows how the lower belly fat is removed and the abdominal wall is flattened from top to bottom. The scar is placed low so that is can't be seen in most clothing.
Before: This woman's abdominal wall becomes progressively more lax the lower you look. She is in good shape; however, the abdominal wall muscles have been stretched out, allowing the abdominal contents to push out the belly. The lower tummy has a localized collection of loose skin and fat which compounds the problem and makes the area look even more full.
After: A Tummy Tuck the abdominal muscles are tight, and the lower abdominal skin and fat have been removed. This smoothes her belly and improves her profile. Liposuction was also performed to remove the disproportionate back fat and trim the waist.
Tummy Tuck Before And After Pictures: Example 2
Tummy Tuck Before and Afters: A larger amount skin and abdominal wall laxity is present in this example due to diastasis recti, a separation of the rectus muscles often seen after pregnancy.
Before: This patient has a large amount of abdominal muscle laxity. Her rectus abdominus muscles have separated down the middle allowing the abdominal content to push forward. A simple test for the separation (diastasis recti) is to lay flat and raise your head. If the abdomen bulges up, rather than flattens, when the muscles contract you either have diastasis recti or a hernia. Both these problems can be repaired during your Tummy Tuck. Her skin is redundant, but she has very little abdominal wall fat. Many obvious stretch marks are seen in the before picture. Lower abdominal stretch marks are removed during a Tummy Tuck, because the skin that contains them is removed. Upper abdominal stretch marks will remain, though they are often flatter and their appearance is usually improved as the skin is tightened.
After: An Abdominoplasty was performed to remove excess skin and tighten the abdominal wall. The diastasis recti was repaired, and the muscle fascia was tightened to provide a flatter contour on profile. In the after picture she is not wearing pants so you can see the Abdominoplasty scar low across her hip. In this position the scar is easily covered by a bikini bottom.
Tummy Tuck Before And After Pictures: Example 3
Tummy Tuck Before and Afters: This woman has very strong abdominal muscles, but she looks like she has a beer belly due to laxity of the muscle sheath (fascia). After her abdominal muscles are tightened, her belly is flat and rectus muscles are back in their normal pre-pregnancy position, giving her the ripped abdominal wall that she has earned through working out.
Before: This patient has an abdomen with a disproportionate collection of fat on her lower belly, compounded by loose skin. Prior to her Abdominoplasty, her rectus abdominus muscles are separated, allowing her entire belly to bulge forward. The purple lines on the lower abdomen represent the skin that was removed during the Tummy Tuck. No Liposuction was performed.
After: A Tummy Tuck corrected her abdominal wall muscle laxity and removed both the extra skin and the extra fat from the lower tummy. Rectus abdominus muscle tightening is apparent by examining the shadows of rectus muscles running up and down the the outer third of the abdominal wall. Before surgery they are pushed apart by the guts pressing forward. After the Abdominoplasty her rectus shadows are pulled together into her pre-pregnancy, physically fit V-shape. This gives her back her more aesthetic, female shape, and makes wearing a bathing suit much easier.
Tummy Tuck Before And After Pictures: Example 4
Tummy Tuck Before and Afters: This woman has lost a lot of weight but still has a large amount of redundant, excess skin, which limits her ability to wear the clothes she wants.
Before: After losing a large amount of weight, the patient shown above is much healthier and feels better but still has trouble fitting into clothes. The large roll of extra skin and the laxity of her abdominal wall make her feel uncomfortable in form-fitting clothing. The redundant skin traps moisture and can cause chronic rashes and recurrent infections. Her horizontally oriented belly button (umbilicus) can be seen just above her purple underwear in the before picture.
After: An extended Tummy Tuck was performed to tighten the muscle fascia, remove the excess lower abdominal skin roll and flatten her belly. The abdominal wall is now firm and flat. The size of her umbilicus is reduced and more vertically oriented. The Extended Tummy Tuck extends around the sides; however, the incision is placed low so that it it is hidden by even small panties in both the front and side views of the after photos shown above.
Fleur De Lis Tummy Tuck Before and After Pictures: Example 5
Tummy Tuck Before and Afters: Bigger problems require bigger tools. In this case, a Fleur De Lis Tummy Tuck is shown. It's the biggest Tummy Tuck plastic surgeons do. It has the usual low incision below the beltline, plus a vertical incision running up the middle of the abdomen to tighten lateral laxity in the upper abdomen. This is done most commonly for patients after massive weight loss.
Before: This woman has lost over 100 pounds. The result is improved health; however, she is left with a large amount of loose skin and abdominal wall laxity. She has had a previous abdominal surgery, so a vertical incision was present before the Fleur De Lis Tummy Tuck.
After: The excess skin has been removed both horizontally and vertically, leaving the abdominal wall tight in both directions. The underlying muscle laxity has also been repaired, leaving the abdomen's foundation flat. The result is a happy patient with a tighter, flatter belly, who now fits into the clothing she has earned after her massive weight loss.
Mommy Makeover Before and After Photos (Breast Augmentation and Tummy Tuck): Example 6
Mommy Makeover Before and Afters: Tummy Tucks after often combined with Breast Augmentation for a Mommy Makeover, as shown above.
Before: This woman had children and wants her body back. Her breasts have deflated and sagged after breast feeding, and her belly is loose and protuberant due to muscle laxity.
After: Her breast atrophy (shrinkage) and ptosis (sagging) have been corrected with Breast Augmentation. Breast Implants were used to restore the volume and shape of her breasts. The excess belly skin was removed with an Abdominoplasty, and now the abdominal wall skin is tight. The abdominal wall muscles are also firm after the Tummy Tuck. After her Mommy Makeover, this patient is much more comfortable in her skin and with showing some skin too.
How Is A Tummy Tuck Done?
The Tummy Tuck is an outpatient Cosmetic Plastic Surgery procedure. It is a combination of skin resection, fat removal and muscle tightening, which provides an opportunity to enhance the major features of a fit belly. Advantages of a Full Tummy Tuck include 1) the ability to correct loose skin above and below the umbilicus 2) the exposure to tighten the muscle fascia, the tough tendonus layer that envelopes the abdominal wall muscles, and 3) the oportunity to completely remove any disproportionate fat on the lower portion of the belly, permanently. Dr. Mele usually keeps his Abdominoplasty patients overnight, to enhance their comfort and safety. More Tummy Tuck Information is available on our Tummy Tuck Page.
